The University of Missouri was founded in 1839 as the first public university west of the Mississippi River, the first public university in Thomas Jefferson's Louisiana Purchase territory.

Libraries
MU has the largest library collection in Missouri, which includes more than 3 million volumes, almost 7 million microforms, 1.6 million government documents and more than 33,000 journal subscriptions. The University library system consists of Ellis Library, University Archives and seven specialized libraries across campus: engineering, geological sciences, health sciences, journalism, law, mathematical sciences and veterinary medicine.
